Wow - I guess I'll go back to wearing my Uzbeki-mumus. I bought a little teal t-shirt that was somewhat form fitting, and in the 10 minutes it took to walk from the conservatory to the bookstore I managed to get cat called and had an entire conversation with a male (Uzbek) friend of mine where he spent the ENTIRE time staring at my chest. I guess the excuse for the necessity of wearing hijab that Uzbek men really can't handle even slightly immodest clothing might actually have some teeth. Oh well, I'll be back in the US in a month and a half and then it can be booby-shirts galore.

And on an unrelated note, the Mark Fiore cartoon on the medical marajuana decision is a good one: http://www.markfiore.com/animation/pain.html

well it depends which women you are talking about - the Uzbek women do tend to dress formally, which is largely quite modest. Russian women here, however dress slutty to the extreme. I swear I have seen women's underware because their skirts are so short/non-existant. It is odd to walk around the streets here - there is a huge contrast between the whorish euro-looking women and the formal and fairly modest Uzbek women. I think my slightly booby t-shirt was very much in the middle ground.

That said, hijab here is a choice that some women make, but most women just dress nicely and modestly.
