When doing research on Christmas, I saw an essay with similar complaints in a newspaper...from the early 1800s. Interestingly, people seem to have been complaining that Christmas is getting too commercial and too much about material goods since roughly the Washington administration. This is not to disparage what you have to say, only to note that it goes back way further than you might expect.
