serestriel and I had beers at the Santa Cruz Mountain Brew Co. and then walked down to Natural Bridges State Beach, where they have a monarch grove. We toddled down a wooden walkway, and wondered to one another if we'd actually see butterflies, since according to S, it's late in the season.
Apparently it is not late in the season here--the monarchs arrive in early October. As we got to the bottom of the ramp and into the tree-lined grove, I didn't see any on the ground and wondered if the late afternoon wasn't the correct time for monarch watching.
Then we looked up. Dozens of butterflies ambled through air from tree to tree above our heads. Little sillouettes flitted from one branch to another in the light of pre-dusk. It was beautiful. People in the bay area should really come and see them before they migrate elsewhere.
Also I've discovered O'mei, which serves chow mein with hand made/pulled noodles less than a mile from my house. I'm learning that Santa Cruz is not such a bad place for eating, and it's certainly easy on the eyes.
