Quite appropriate, since I caught up with the latest two episodes of this season yesterday night. Seriously dark episodes. It's always been a dark series, but all this eliding of sex, love, and violence is a bit much even for my Bret Easton Ellis-, Solzhenitsyn-appreciating tastes.

And while I'm talking sci fi shows, I've now watched the first season of Babylon 5 and am TOTALLY hooked. However, as much love as Ivanova seems to get on my friends page, I hate the odd caricature statements she makes about her Russianness. Her character as a whole is great--strong and funny--a rare find for women portrayed on TV. But seriously, if I hear her say another line that ends with "...I'm Russian" or begins with "We Russians..." with stereotypical matrionichka doll blather in between, well I think I'm gonna hurl. Please tell me that this kind of writing improves in later seasons.

Don't worry, she drops that as the seasons progress. She's a bit more worried about other things after Season 1. Like Talia...*giggle*

Also, I run Bab5 viewing nights, but we're at the end of Season 3 right now. I am planning on having a movie night at some point, though, which will probably include the pilot movie.

I totally <3 B5! Yes, I can see how Ivanova could get on your nerves... there's a lot of over-the-top acting and writing and so forth in the first season (but I personally love it anyway because I really like Sinclair as the commander, and it was the season I actually watched back when it was on TV)... I think you'll find that it will improve over the course of the series. It's some good TV, I tell you what. :) dushai and I are in the process of watching through the series and are probably 2/3 through season 1. So I don't remember how much Ivanova improves, but I'd imagine it's a lot.

Actually it gets a little worse, and goes from being 'I'm Russian' to 'I'm a Russian Jew'. Her using being a russkie as a reason for her being the way she is happens about once every 4 or 5 episodes though.
