I didn't think that gun control was even an issue in the public consciousness right now, with all the other strife that is around. Mark Fiore's cartoon is hilarious, and makes a decent argument for better gun laws. http://www.markfiore.com/animation/shoot.html
Perhaps gun control is out of the media right now because in a republican run congress, there is no chance of passing anything (never mind the conservative-bias press).

In many states here in the US, there are already many, mamy laws that provide for heavy penalties for misuse of firearms - the problem is that agter cynical politicians get them passed (as a PR tool to make them 'look tough on crime') these laws ARE NOT used. As is often the case, another generation of polotical hacks will use the same tactic - instead of writing news, redundant laws, we should be pressuring pliticians to enfirce the ones already enacted.
...and I'm far from being a gun nut.
