goodbyes

Y just dropped by to say good bye and give me something to drop off for another one of Prof. H's advisee's.

I'm so sad to see her go. Some goodbyes are harder than others--I suppose this one is harder because I don't really know when we'll see each other again, and Y's and my friendship had turned into that lovely relaxed back door kind of friendship where there was no pressure and we could see each other when it was convenient, but it ended up being convenient fairly often.

People are so transient these days. Email and LJ help keep us in contact, but I can't help but mourn the loss of someone I could call on a whim for a beer and commiseration.

You speak the truth my friend. Reminds me how much I miss my best friend who moved up to Anchorage last year. We email and LJ, but it's not the same.

It really isn't the same, and Anchorage (and Korea in my case) are difficult places to visit without a lot of money and effort.

Have you considered Skype (or some other flavour of video chat)? I appreciate it's still not the same but being able to chat 'face to face' is a lot closer than email & LJ.

Even Skype's basic (free) VoIP service is worth having. Add on SkypeOut and/or SkypeIn and it'll let you call ordinary phones in far distant lands for small amounts or even - as I do - maintain a phone number in a far off land for friends there to call.

I used skype while I was in Central Asia, and didn't like it much, but that might have been because of my craptacular connection there.

I've heard they've gotten better, so perhaps it's worth looking into -- thanks for the recommendation.

Santa Cruz is only about an hour away from me (if I drive fast) and it seems my ties to Santa Cruz are being renewed again.. might be able to pop by for a beer and some (bad) Uzbek down the road. =)
