goodbyes
Y just dropped by to say good bye and give me something to drop off for another one of Prof. H's advisee's.
I'm so sad to see her go. Some goodbyes are harder than others--I suppose this one is harder because I don't really know when we'll see each other again, and Y's and my friendship had turned into that lovely relaxed back door kind of friendship where there was no pressure and we could see each other when it was convenient, but it ended up being convenient fairly often.
People are so transient these days. Email and LJ help keep us in contact, but I can't help but mourn the loss of someone I could call on a whim for a beer and commiseration.

Even Skype's basic (free) VoIP service is worth having. Add on SkypeOut and/or SkypeIn and it'll let you call ordinary phones in far distant lands for small amounts or even - as I do - maintain a phone number in a far off land for friends there to call.

I've heard they've gotten better, so perhaps it's worth looking into -- thanks for the recommendation.
