Music of Silk Roads Class

I'm excited to finally get to teach my silk roads class this winter, even if it is to a max of 80 lower div. undergrads, rather than the senior seminar that I originally conceived it as.

Constructing the reader has turned out to be a huge pain, since 2 of the books I own and want to use for it (old travelers' tales) have disappeared in one of my many recent moves and it's thrown me into a bit of a tail spin.

However, the class itself should really rock - I've just booked 2 guest lectures, both of which will do live music demos (of qanun and setar) at my dutaring to all that, and it should be a pretty engaging 10 weeks. I hope. Hell, at this point I just hope some folks register for it.

hi, you don't know me; i found your journal when someone on my friends list (i don't remember who) mentioned you with regards to UCSC and central asian music. i'm a senior community studies major at UCSC, but my focus (and major obsession in life) is the middle east and central asia. so i thought i'd introduce myself. i'm alexander. incidentally, if you'd allow and if my schedule permits, i'd love to audit your class!

I don't know the dept. policy on auditors or if there will be space in my classroom, but you're certainly welcome to take the course.

What are you planning on doing upon graduation? Sometime you're welcome to drop by my office hours (2-3 T, 10-11 W) and talk about grad school options or central asian stuff in non-academic life.

unfortunately i don't have room in my schedule to take the course, otherwise i'd certainly sign up.

i'm trying to arrange to study in iran for a year following graduation. after that i'll be applying to graduate programs in middle eastern studies. i'm currently on field study in los angeles, but when i return to santa cruz in january i will be sure to come by.

Ah Tehrangeles - I lived there while I did my own grad work - fun stuff! The rose ice cream at that one Persian bakery/icecream shop on Westwood is amazing.

I would love to take your class, it sounds great. If only I didn't live 6 hours away.

I'd be very interested to get a syllabus/recording list/reading list if you're inclined to post it.
