Jan. 16th, 2005 09:14 amI've been getting the weekly e-zine by the organic consumers association - I think it is really interesting and it provides a lot of evidence as to why Monsanto is a pretty dirty corportation, even for a corportation. The latest issue of GM wheat is becoming more than an environmental issue - it's an economic issue, since people in Europe and Japan have realized how frightening GM food is for humans and the environment and have banned them, by and large. It is always fascinating to me that there is no such uproar in the US. I suppose it is because we still have a large farming community and people want to believe that technologically advanced food is a good thing. Well that and the press never mentioning the scary things.
The thing that most suprised me was a list of all the organic/natural food companies that are owned by large corporations that indulge in fairly dubious ethical practices:
This is just a list of who Monsanto owns a piece of:
•Brand Name(s): Arrowhead Mills, Bearitos, Breadshop, Celestial Seasonings, Earth's Best Baby Food, Garden of Eatin, Health Valley, Imagine Foods, Terra Chips, Westbrae, Millina's, Mountain Sun, Shari Ann's, Walnut Acres Owned By: Hain Food Group Principle Stockholders: Bank of America, Entergy Nuclear, ExxonMobil, H.J. Heinz, Lockheed Martin, Merck, Monsanto, Pfizer, Philip Morris, Walmart, Waste Mangement Inc. Significantly Owned By: Citigroup
