I find this incredibly amusing. According to this quizzy thing, I am completely untravelled in asia. You know, except the fact that I'm living there right now: ExpandRead more... )

Now for a real update. The party for Uzbeks went well. Malika opa showed up with a huge batch of plov and some non. It amazed me how my Uzbek friends and colleagues work to bring their culture into all of our activities. I think a fun time was had by all, even though I had been attacked by the snot monster of death. Spring colds are just evil. Luckily yesterday R was able to go to the bazaar to get me the makings for my cold remedy (ginger, lemon, and honey). After a few cups I'm already feeling better.

Sunday night we also went to our friend's Seder, which was long but informative (and interrupted many times by my honky nose blowing). I think K was glad that we were there even though I was sick, since she doesn't have many people to share her holidays with here in Tashkent. The orthodox Seder is much much longer and more involved than the ones I remember that I went to with my adopted pagan-jewish mom from college.

Yesterday I had to do another TV interview, this time with a froggy cold voice. It was all kinds of no fun. I have a hard time sounding intelligent (and intelligible) in Uzbek even without a brain full of snot. This was just miserable. Malika opa was very gentle with me though, so it wasn't all bad.

Today I'm going to try and take it easy because there is supposed to be another competition in Karshi sometime in late April or early May. That means more travelling and risking tummy issues.

Well it seems that half my mahalla (neighborhood) has no electricity and the other half has no hot water. I'm on the no-hot-water side, so I supposed I should be grateful. I wonder if this is what the US is going to be like in a decade or two if all the energy crisis/peak oil theories are right.

Anyway, here are some non-music-realted fieldnotes for once: ExpandRead more... )

For those of you who are feeling charitable at the moment, and want to sent a little bit of cash to someone who really needs it, one of my friends back in LA has a very very sick puppy. The vet bills are adding up and they can't pay them. I paypaled them $10 all the way from Central Asia, so I figured those of you who are a little more local and feeling generous might want to help as well. Here's the link:
