Jun. 22nd, 2005 05:25 pmIsn't it nice when you can actually do something that makes a difference in someone else's life?
I had one of those today and it just makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over. As I was coming into the conservatory this morning to watch exams, one of the flute teachers in the an'anaviy department (Shahmahmud aka) came out of the exam room and said "Merchimerchhon, siz bilan gapim bor" (Merchimerch, I've got something I need to tell you). He went on to say that his 9 year old daughter has been accepted to Interlochen Music Camp for the summer and has been granted a full scholarship. I congratulated him and then he told me the kicker.
The acceptance letter arrived less than a week ago and the camp starts on Saturday (June 25). Becuase of understaffing due to the evacuation, the soonest visa appointment they could get with the US embassy was July 11. He asked me if there was anyone I could talk to and anything I could do. I told him that it was doubtful since they are so understaffed and only accepting students and emergencies, but that I would email my contact in the consul's office (I didn't tell him that it was the consul himself). I emphasized that I have "tanish" (acquaintances) with people in the office, but that I have no influence with them since I'm just a lowly student. I wished him and his daughter luck, and told him that I would do what I could, but not to hold his breath.
At lunch I emailed the consulor and told him the whole story. I made sure to tell him just how prestigious Interlochen was and how I always wanted to go as a kid, but never had the money. By the time I got home at 4 pm, the consulor answered my email and told me to tell Shahmahmud aka to call his office immediately, that this situtation qualifies as both an emergency and a student situtation and that they can reschedule an appointment ASAP. I called Shahmahmud aka and told him and he was over joyed. He called the office and now has an appointment on Friday. He said it doesn't matter if his daughter is a couple days late and thanked me profusely.
I'm so thrilled for her. Hopefully this will be a start to a wonderful career.
I just hope the others in the conservatory who hear about this still realize that I don't have any more power to get people visas than I used to - I was just lucky to have the right contact to smooth things over.
