OMG! My older brother sent my dad a banjo for Christmas!!
I got to tune it for him and put little stickers on the appropriate piano keys so that he can find the right pitches to tune it to for himself.
For those who haven't met my father, he's an outwardly stern and honorable ex-military guy, but is pretty goofy and kind hearted when not in public. My strongest childhood memories involving his musical tastes include riding in his big red truck listening to the country music station and him putting Alabama on the record player while my mom rolled her eyes. A while ago his musical tastes transitioned from more mainstream country to bluegrass, newgrass, and some old time and Canadian alterna-folk. Recently he's been saying that he wants to take up the banjo in retirement. Looks like he gets a jump start on that one - it's so exciting to see him about to embark on the acquisition of a new skill/knowledge set. I hope I'm as ballsy and adventurous when I hit age 57.
