bike trails/routes in SJ?

So one of my projects for this summer is to sort out a good bike+public transport way to get from SC to San Jose. Those of you who live in and around the south bay, I'd like your advice on the best way to get around once I hop off the bus with bike in hand.


The highway 17 bus lets off at the transit center near the HP Pavilion in San Jose. I'd love to know where good routes are from there. Are there dedicated bike trails near there? Are some streets equipped with bike lanes? Are there streets that are disasters/lethal like Mission St. in SC that I should avoid at all costs?

I'd love to hear your recommendations.
