Yeah I am much better at holding my tounge in these situations here than I am in the US. My experiences here have really been a lesson in picking my battles. It really does come down to cultural issues. There are probably a lot of women who fantasize about not having to work and being able to stay home and have lots of babies to care for. I also know plenty of Uzbek women who would never go for that. This is a culture that values family and children and the elderly more than I see in the US. Well elderly and children so long as they are related to you.

I think I take out my angst on taxi drivers. Anytime they give me a hassle, instead of remaing calm and talking to them about how they should not assume that I don't know how much a fare should be, I get petulant and confrontational. I think I am releasing all the angst that builds up when I withold a rant from other people who are just functioning in their own cultural norm.

I decided to go to Uzbekistan because I fell in love with the music and I realized that the issues I am interested in researching (music and gender, music and nationalism, music and indentity construction) are quite tangible here. Uzbekistan is pretty much the only place you can get a reliable dutar teacher.
