My family got tired of the commercialization of the season a few years back. My brother had the courage to announce one year that he would neither give nor accept Christmas presents from then on because he doesn't like the consumer culture of it. After that, my Aunt & Uncle started giving donations to charity instead of presents, and as of last year, Sarah and I started doing the same. We find it a nice change, and as we're Christian, we feel a lot better able to focus on what we believe to be the important thing to celebrate this season. Now we just need to get Sarah a job where she doesn't have to work retail during this season. I encourage people of any religion to find other ways of celebrating the holidays than spending lots of money buying stuff - it's a freeing experience, and there are plenty of ways to show you care for people besides being a consumer.
