Oh I believe it - I'm sure the dichotomy between Christmas as holiday about peace, love, and goodwill and Christmas as holiday about reinforcing hierarchy and status through gifts goes back even before commercialism.
I still get melancholy, ironic amusement when observing human behavior at this time of year.
