archive

It is official, the Grateful Dead estate bequeathed their archive to UCSC.

There will be a Grateful Dead display in the new library, and the archive will be housed in the new special collections wing of the McHenry library once it is finished.

Hopefully this will bring more popular music scholarship to the university and to the department.

LOL! My mom taught music at my HS (a grrls catholic school liberated by Vatican II) and decided that some rock albums would help her reach her students. After asking around, her first album was Workingman's Dead.
The 16 yr old me thought it was pretty funny.
As a singer my mom thought Joni Mitchell screeched and couldn't get past Procul Harem's 'vestal virgins' lyrics to appreciate the music.

This is FANTASTIC news for scholarship! Also for me, because as a long-time Deadhead I feel vindicated!!

Please let me know if there are any events, etc. connected with the gift, the exhibits, etc. And if you want to set up an inaugural conference, I have TONS of things to say about the Dead!

Dude
