hairball drama

Why does the cat with the hairball problem not want to eat petromalt from my finger, whereas the cat with no hairball problem will gladly eat the petromalt from my finger and eat any that the disinterested but hairball-laden kitty drops or flings away.
Does anyone have any tips on getting a reticent kitty to eat the hairball medicine?
I've tried smearing it on her paw, which she just flicks off, and putting some on her cheek, which also gets a major removal attempt before any ingesting.
The poor kitty is puking up a hair ball about 2ce a week right now and I know from past experience that petromalt does help if I can just get it into her. Advice please!
