I have been having very intense lessons - I think videoing the lessons is definitely making my practice more efficient and I think i just have a skill level now that means that I am working on smaller details and larger chunks of of music at a time. We finished Savti Kalon today, and have gone on to Talqincha Savti Kalon, the 2nd song in the cycle which is in a polyrhythmic 9 (2+2+2+3) and during the 3 section I swear Malika opa pulls it back even further behind the beat. Her mantra at me this year is to stop hurrying - R even remembers the term "Shoshilmang!" (don't rush!) now, he's heard it so many times. I think the Western classical training has made my sense of rhythm very square and given me that faster-is-better type of mentality. Maqom works exactly the opposite - everything is about stretching - pitch, time, melody, vibrato. Plus I think people just play behind the beat in general.
R and I had georgian food last night and 2.5 litres of wine split between us and my friend J from Seattle who's also in Tashkent for the year. He an electrical engineer and an astronomy buff and seems like he will be a good friend for R this year. Unfortunately I think the culture shock is exacerbating R's absentmindedness - he left his english teaching books under his chair at the restaurant last night and we need to go back and fetch them. At least those should be retrievable.
Tomorrow will be busy - I should get my embassy badges, cash a check to get money, be at the institute by 11 AM and maybe observe Timur aka teaching at the uchilish.
