oh my heavens. I have not had halibut in 8 years. I had some tonight. It was AMAZING - taste bud memories from childhood in a very very good way.
R and I went to the Big Lots for a pie pan, ketchup, and a cutting board, came home with that, lots of ice tea, and Masters of Orion II for $6. Then we went to Ivars for fish and chips. It was so delicious - they have vinegar for the chips, just like Al's french fries in VT (and yes I know everywhere else in the world but America). I got the Salmon-Halibut-Cod combo and the halibut just blew me away. When I was a kid living in Alaska we didn't have much money and meat was EXPENSIVE in the grocery store. So the family went fishing. We caught salmon and halibut, but one salmon yields like 7-10 lbs of meat and one halibut yields like 25-75 lbs of meat. So I grew up eating lots of halibut - like 4 times a week. I remember my older brother and I complaining to my mom and asking why we couldn't just have hamburger. When I left alaska in '96 I never ate halibut again - mostly because it doesn't seem to exist except in the pacific northwest, so I don't trust it anywhere else. I must have waited long enough to try it again because it was amazing. I want more.
R also told me that he was so happy to come home from work and cuddle me - it is the first time he's had something positive to come home to pretty much ever. It must be having a good effect because he is doing well at his job and has been a marvelous and supportive husband during recent rather difficult events.
