It has been a busy couple of days, I am back in the swing of things with observing classes at the conservatory and should start at the uchilish next week. Malika opa is playing in a concert tonight and it looks like I'll have permission to record it.

The 2 days at the conservatory were interesting -I'm sitting in on 2 Uzbek language music history classes and one Russian language one. The tone seems quite different and one of the profs said that the interests of the classes are different, so of course the content/direction of the class would be different. I'm amazed at how little musical production gets talked about. These music history classes seem to be another way of reinforcing the newly reimagined history of Uzbekistan with the "Great Men" figuring prominently everywhere. Wednesday's class was focusing on Alisher Navoi's writings about music, and about everything else, and Thursday's class focused in on Ibn Sin's writings about music. Both men seem to have written about the healing qualities of music, which is something that people still give a lot of lip service to. In both classes I saw students getting berated for etiquette (one for coming in and interrupting the class, the other for being late). In each class the impolite person enabled the entire class to be treated to a tiraid on how students should act (timeliness, respect for teachers, etc.). I can't help wondering if this was either the beginning of the semester crackdown or a show for my benefit.
