Wow today is turning out to be one huge lesson in letting go.
Today's meditation in yoga was all about letting go of fears and animosity.
Then I had a voice lesson which is turning out to be very much about letting go of my ideas about how to sing, whether or not I can sing, and how high I can sing.
Then I got back from my voice lesson and R was off trying to call our landlords and a locksmith because neither of our keys were working in the lock to get the door open. To start off, this lock has been acting up since the first month we've been here. Rich has fiddled with it a little to get it working better, but it finally just basically gave out, unfortunately while we were both out of the house. R was supposed to be having an Uzbek lesson, so the teacher, Rulsan aka was there and he called our landlords. They said that Abdulla aka wasn't home, but that they would try to call him at work to try and get our door open. Our instructions were to wait for them, so I was left sitting on the cement steps of our building waiting for our landlord while R went and bought a shim to try and jimmy the door open with.
About 45 minutes later, after R had returned and unsuccessfully tried to get the door open again, the elevator opened and a young guy came out, saying that our landlady called him and that he installed the lock and would break the concrete that he'd put up so that he could get at the lock and open the door. He did this, conferred with R about how to get the lock working again and set to reinstalling it. R went to go meet a friend, leaving me with the guy fixing the door. As the guy finished his work, he said that our landlady said that we'd pay him. I questioned this, since it seems to me that this is an issue with the apartment and that the landlady called him, so she should pay. I said this, and he called the landlady. I got on the phone and asked about the situtation, explaining that we didn't abuse the lock or anything, and that I don't think it was our fault that it malfunctioned, plus we didn't call the guy, we called them to fix it. I was trying to remain calm and not raise my voice or even add a funny tone to it, but it is hard to do this kind of communication in your 2nd or 3rd language. At some point she asked if she should have to pay for everything we break and I think I got defensive. I told her that we didn't break it, that I don't think we were at fault and proceeded to try and talk about the issue. In the middle of the discussion (I thought), the landlady said "fine, if you won't pay him, I will" and hung up on me.
So I payed the the guy the $10 he asked, which seems pretty exorbitant to me, and now I'm not sure what to do about the landlord and lady. I certainly am not trying to pick a fight with them, I'm just trying to figure out what is right. And I don't want to make enemies, but I also feel like we pay decent rent because the landlord is supposed to take care of these things. Maybe this is an American assumption. I'm just very upset and hoping I haven't pissed anyone off beyond repair and mostly I just wish R had stayed home because he usually has a better feel for what to do in these situations.
ugh....I need to figure out how to just let this go.
