St Paddy's

I just realized why St. P's day is not a huge deal in my family - my mom usually made a green cake or something, and that was about it. We're Irish protestants, duh!

Even so, R and I went to the Plaza Hof Brau for corned beef and cabbage. It was REALLY good. I reccommend the Hof Brau to anyone who comes to Sacramento - it has definite retro/camp appeal. Apparently there used to be many hof braus in Sac, but this is the only one that has survived.

After an early dinner, R went off to help his dad and bring him the last of the crockpot BBQ beef that I made on Thurs, and I had a few beers while working on my dissertation. When he got back we tried to go to the independent cafe that we keep meaning to try, but it was closed by 10pm on a Friday, so we ended up at Starbucks. No, my latte wasn't green.

I have to say, aside from the fact that I wish they had real cups for eat-in customers, Starbucks has alot going for them. I know they're an evil corporation that is taking over, but gosh they have tasty stuff, and are open long hours, and have friendly staff who will make whatever you want. I hear from a friend of mine that they have better benefits now than other coffee places (like Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf). I'm certainly not comfortable liking them, nor am I about to develop a starbucks everyday kind of habit/addiction, but they do have a pretty appealing set up.

My ex was told by her dad they were Scotch Irish, not really Irish. Turns out this means they came to Ireland from Scotland like 1000 years ago. They were protestants. But he insulted the Irish (among others).
When she figured out she was really irish it was pretty funny!

Starbucks also pays a decent wage (greater than minimum) and has benefit options that are actually affordable. And they have made it possible for little indie coffee shops to exist elsewhere, by creating and feeding the nation's desire for espresso-based drinks. So while they are still a large corp where profit is the bottom line, they are not all bad. :)

Hey - that makes me feel better about being an occasional patron. I never thought of the fact that it actually set the stage for indie coffee shops.
