This has been a really fun and exciting day.
After spending the afternoon with my mom I was playing with her hair, trying to make the perm look okay (my mom has a complex about her thin hair and always thinks that frying it with a perm will make it better). So we were talking about cutting it in an abstract sense, when she hands me the scissors, saying "well try it - you're artistic and good with your hands"...it was the first haircut I'd given anyone since I cut my cousin Mike's bangs toothbrush-style with saftey scissors when I was five. My mom's hair came out really well actually. I just trimmed up the back, giving my mom a little bit of a shelf/mushroom cut. I think it looks cute, and if it turns out horrible when she wakes up tomorrow, she can always go to the salon and make them fix it. I now have a new aspect to my identity...and a new back up career to add to the foreign service and teaching 4th grade math ;P
Also, I just found out that I got accepted to give a paper at the Association for Nationalities Studies conference in NYC in April, so I get to figure out how to fund that little side trip (and write a spiffy paper that non specialists can understand). I also got asked to serve on a panel for SEMSCC, so it will be a busy spring.
