merchimerchI spent yesterday thinking about other things, but I do want to mark MLK day in my LJ, especially since civil rights seem to be more in danger now than ever in our nation. I hope that we continue to have people of courage and titanium will to stand up for humanity and the rights we all deserve.
Martin Luther King coined my favorite quote, one that has inspired me at many points, but perhaps never more than in recent months:
"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."
Beyond that, he also said so many wonderful things. Here's just a few:
"Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness."
"A right delayed is a right denied."
"At the center of non-violence stands the principle of love."
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
"Have we not come to such an impasse in the modern world that we must love our enemies - or else? The chain reaction of evil - hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars - must be broken, or else we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation."
