I am so happy to live in the land of good beer! [livejournal.com profile] rednikki and [livejournal.com profile] mycranium1 visited me on their weekend jaunt up north with 2 friends and I managed to join them for 2 beer tastings, one at a brewing co that is just a mile and a half from my house! The Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing Co. has a really nice seasonal Ollaliberry Wheat Beer that is worth driving the 17 for. Their regular wheat and Dread Brown Ale also top my list.

For dinner we drove up route 9 past the Henry Cowell Redwood State Park on twisty slow BEAUTIFUL roads to the Boulder Creek Brewing Co., where I had a delicious organic local burger with avocado and sauteed mushrooms and a tasting set of 5 beers, which included 2 stouts - I like this place! The Mudslide stout was really delicious - after sipping all 5 I downed that first. The Black Dragon Stout was also good, but not quite as rich. Their pale ale was alright and their IPA was actually palatable (I usually hate hopsy beers and often leave the glass of IPA after a sip when I go beer tasting). They also have a medium bodied Redwood Ale which is quite complex and crisp - very nice indeed.

Add of that on top of the Oregon micros that even corner liquor shops carry here, and it seems probably that I will have a happy beer-filled existence.

And behind the cut, a color meme that rings fairly true brought to me via [livejournal.com profile] nonseqmenagerie:

Yum! I've often found it harder to find good stouts in California, I guess because lighter beers work better with warm weather. But it sounds like you're in a good place. Happy drinking (and, you know, teaching and stuff).

Yeah, I really like it here so far. If you ever feel like a bit of a drive and a study break, it'd be great to meet up at the Boulder Creek Brew pub - I'm not sure how far it is from Berkeley, but it is probably worth the (gorgeous) drive. You could even use the opportunity to introduce me to the missus.

That sounds like a good idea. And apparently the pub is only an hour away. We're kind of busy for the next few months, but I hope we can squeeze a trip in. I'll send you an e-mail.
