I found this interview with journalist Amy Goodman, who was arrested while covering the Republican convention, to be really interesting.

It makes me worry further about the role of the military and law enforcement in our current society.

I love Amy Goodman - I've listened to Democracy Now! for years.

I too am troubled by this whole thing. A quick look in my Galls catalog (which sells first responder supplies) shows an increasing 'militarization' in our law enforcement. The pre-emptive, provocative stance apparently taken by police during the RNC convention should make anyone who cares about government power aghast.

I also happen to know, and work with plenty of law enforcement. They were instrumental in saving my butt out in the playa when I was assaulted a few weeks ago (several times!) So I appreciate the need, and the people who make up the profession...

"Who shall police the police?"

Yes, I think the Bush Doctrine is being applied to more than just the military at this point and it is very frightening.

I grew up as a military brat, most often in small towns where members of the police were viewed as "good guys" who would provide help if needed and usually had a personal connection to someone I knew. To see our military and police force head in this direction is terrifying, especially since if inquiries are made and charges of misconduct filed, the rank and file will be punished for a problem that originates much higher up the chain of command.
