Just in case I ever doubt the value of my hubby, I wanted to put this in my journal. R and I found time to have lunch with professor H. as we were leaving LA on Sunday. It was a really nice lunch and gave R a chance to meet with the prof. who has been so important to me. She emailed me today saying this:

"I was delighted you could manage lunch before you started the long trek back, and it was very nice to meet R properly for the first time. You are unbelievably lucky to have found such a nice, smart, and very supportive person with a good sense of humour."

That's right - unbelievably lucky pretty much sums it up.

Oh, and he's cute too, but professors probably aren't allowed to objectify their students' husbands.

'Cute' is 'objectify' but 'smart' and 'nice' aren't? :)

well yes, in the sense that cute would imply some kind of acknowledgement of physical attractiveness, thus placing R in the position of sexual object.

Smart and nice may create a sence of "object," but not in a sexual or inappropriate way.

I'm not what you'd call 100% certain. I don't think we're talking about controlling the behaviour of nice people, and I think we are talking about academics. A 'smart' and 'nice' person is going to have their work stolen by an 'inappropriate' academic; a 'cute' one is just going to look nice giving a presentation....

Well, ok, there are many kinds of inappropriateness in academia. I just suspect there are a hundred authorship theives for every rapist. Not, you know, that I think we want more rapists.

:-}

well, I don't think objectification by labelling someone "cute" or "nice" would lead to rape. Sexual harrassment and husband poaching were the types of inappropriate behavior I was thinking of.

Well, true. But I don't think calling someone 'smart' will lead to plagiarism, either. But it might lead to collaborator poaching ;).
